How Hair Straighteners Work

Hair straighteners are one of those items that would have seemed like science fiction to women a few decades ago. They may even have questioned the need for them. Today they are a must have item for a lot of women. Straight hair for some is worth the effort and with straighteners it's now a simple process to turn curls straight. Hair straightening irons to give them their full name work on the same principle as the iron that takes the creases out of your clothes. Heat is used to straighten the hairs by breaking down hydrogen bonds which make the hair curly. Without the bonds the hair will stay straight for a time.

The hotter temperature the straightening irons can reach the easier it will be to straighten the hair and the longer lasting the effect will be. The one thing that can break the spell of straight hair however is moisture. Get your hair wet and the hydrogen bonds will go back to their original condition giving you frizz or curls. Regular hair straighteners only work on dry hair but there are certain types available which can be used on a wet mop.

Due to the high temperatures that straightening irons need to reach they are often made from ceramic elements. In fact ceramic is used in straighteners, curlers, clippers and rollers due to its ability to get super hot and to do it quickly. Ceramic is generally regarded as causing less damage to the hair. In the case of tourmaline hair straighteners the ceramic is replaced with the tourmaline gem which is also said to have natural healing properties.
